When Hunger Kicks in: The Story of a Hungry Child
P6 Jane
Do you know what hunger feels like? It feels like a vampire biting your intestines. You can’t move because the pain is severe. It’s something hard to accept.
One year ago, I joined the “desert adventure” with my friends. I had been anticipating this day ever since I received the confirmation that my friends were all on board. I became restless. I simply couldn’t sleep because I was excited about my trip. I was as happy like a bird flying in the sky. As time progressed my emotions was like a roller coaster; first happy, then nervous, and finally scared.
One night I abruptly fell asleep. I dreamed that I went into the desert. The atmosphere was very dry. The torrid sunshine burned on my body. I felt as though I was like a steak on a BBQ grill, well seasoned with salt. I was very dehydrated. I yelled, “Help, help!” Suddenly I heard “Tick, tick, tick.” I woke up. “Was that all a dream?” I said to myself. Then I immediately looked at the time, “It was 9:30,” I shouted. I quickly took my bag and streaked down the front steps. I ran as fast as I could to the airport. I made it in time to board the airplane. I was heading to Saudi Arabia. When we arrived in Saudi Arabia, the temperature was 42 degree Celsius. I almost couldn’t stand the heat. It was like a boiling pot of soup, but on the other hand the desert was really beautiful. It looked like a golden wheat field. I was very fascinated with the scenery. Suddenly a gust of wind blew my way which made me feel at ease.
I open my eyes slowly; my friends and my bags disappeared, it was exactly the same as my dream. I felt the emptiness in my stomach. I hollered loudly on top of my lungs for help, but no one came to my rescue. I was there for over an hour alone. I felt very hungry and thirsty. It felt like firewood was burning in my stomach. As time progressed, my stomach ached more. I began to panic. I was there approximately twenty four hours. Eventually someone came and rescued me. It was an Arabian woman. She looked at me and gave me some water and food to eat. She rescued me from my hunger. At first I thought she wasn’t friendly, but later I realized that she was just the opposite. I cuddled with her immediately and nervously said, “Thank you.” She looked at me and smiled and said nothing.
This was the scariest thing that had ever happened to me. After that incident, I never stayed hungry again. I ate all the time.
